Alternative to Nature-Throid
Alternative to Nature-Throid is the request I get from anxious patients as well as the pharmacies all day long. Nature-Throid is almost out at most pharmacies. This shortage has been getting worse over the last month. Apparently the manufacturer of Nature-Throid (RLC Labs) seems to be having difficulty meeting the demand of Nature-Throid due to “significant upgrades to our facility and equipment,”according to the company’s statement.
Alternative to Nature-Throid
Please do not panic over the shortage of Nature-throid. You can have one of the following as a great alternative to Nature-Throid.
Switch to another brand of the Dessicated Thyroid as an Alternative to Nature-Throid
I started to prescribe T3 and T4 combination to my hypothyroid patients over ten years ago. I have seen amazing results in these patients. Over the years, I have used Dessicated Thyroid with various brand names (Nature-throid, WP thyroid, Westhroid, Armour Thyroid, NP thyroid). I have found all of them to be equally effective, although there is marked difference in their prices. WP thyroid and Westhroid are produced by the same manufacturer as Nature-Throid. We are finding out these brands are also out at most pharmacies. Armour thyroid and NP Thyroid are the best alternative to Nature-Throid. Both of these are available at the pharmacies. We are switching from Nature-Throid to NP thyroid or Armour thyroid without any problem of shortage. Apparently Armour thyroid is pretty expensive. Therefore, at this time NP thyroid is my favorite pick. Another advantage of NP thyroid is that you can use it as a chewable tablet.
Switch to a Compounding Pharmacy as an Alternative to Nature-Throid
You can also switch to a compounding pharmacy. Ask your physician to write you a prescription of T4+T3 per capsule. The conversion from Dessicated Thyroid to Compounding pharmacy requires in-depth thyroid knowledge on the part of the physician. One grain (65 mg) of Nature-Throid contains approximately 38 mcg of T4 (Levothyroxine) and 9 mcg of T3 ( Liothyronine). Over the years, I have prescribed T4, T3 combination through compounding pharmacies. In general, it works out well. The good side is that it gives me a lot of latitude to tailor the amount of T4 and T3 according to an individual’s needs. The down side is that compounding pharmacies are expensive. In addition, you need to find a reputable compounding pharmacy.
Switch to Synthetic T4 and T3 as an Alternative to Nature-Throid
Some patients prefer synthetic T4 (Levothyroxine) and T3 (Liothyronine). This combination works well as long the physician prescribes the correct amounts of T4 and T3. Often physicians prescribe too little of T3 (Liothyronine) and too much of T4 (Levothyroxine.). The correct ratio that I have found to be effective is 4:1 of T4:T3. It is pretty much the same ratio of T4 to T3 that is found in any Dessicated Thyroid brand including Nature-Throid.
Monitoring T4 and T3 While on an Alternative to Nature-Throid
Monitor your symptoms as well as blood test for free T3 and free T4, while you switch from Nature-Throid to one of the alternatives. You may need some tweaking in the dosage.
Beyond an Alternative to Nature-Throid
Hypothyroidism is not just replacing T4 and T3. The comprehensive treatment of hypothyroidism should go beyond medication. My treatment approach consists of 5-steps: Stress management, proper Nutrition, proper Exercise, appropriate Vitamins, in addition to the correct Medication, the SNEVM.
