Can I Control My Diabetes Without Drugs?
You can control your Type 2 diabetes without drugs, if you have
mild diabetes in its early stages, which is diagnosed with an Oral
Glucose Tolerance Test, as I mentioned in Chapter on "My Approach to the
Treatment of Diabetes. Unfortunately, most people have advanced diabetes
by the time they are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Then, you usually
need anti-diabetic medications, at least initially. Think of
anti-diabetic drugs as a "necessary evil."
It is true that every drug carries some potential side-effects,
but uncontrolled diabetes can also lead to serious complications.
Therefore, it is important to control your diabetes effectively.
Physicians should prescribe anti-diabetic medications only as an
adjunct to life-style changes, which I have already described in detail.
Unfortunately, many physicians simply focus on prescribing medicines,
without discussing life-style changes with their diabetic patients.
Ultimately, it is between you and your physician whether you
decide to go an anti-diabetic drug or not.
