Medications - Drugs For Type 2 Diabetes

Medications is the last component of the revolutionary 5-Step approach to treat Type 2 diabetes, developed by Dr. Zaidi. He gives a detailed description of the anti-diabetic drugs, free of any commercial bias, in his book, "Reverse Your Type 2 Diabetes Scientifically."

Excerpts from "Reverse Your Type 2 Diabetes Scientifically"

Chapter 15

Prescription Medications,

When Necessary

Now we come to what I see as the fifth step to manage Type 2 diabetes: prescription drugs.

Can I Control My Diabetes Without Drugs?

You can control your Type 2 diabetes without drugs, if you have mild diabetes in its early stages, which is diagnosed with an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, as I mentioned in Chapter on "My Approach to the Treatment of Diabetes. Unfortunately, most people have advanced diabetes by the time they are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Then, you usually need anti-diabetic medications, at least initially. Think of anti-diabetic drugs as a "necessary evil."

It is true that every drug carries some potential side-effects, but uncontrolled diabetes can also lead to serious complications. Therefore, it is important to control your diabetes effectively.

Physicians should prescribe anti-diabetic medications only as an adjunct to life-style changes, which I have already described in detail. Unfortunately, many physicians simply focus on prescribing medicines, without discussing life-style changes with their diabetic patients.

Ultimately, it is between you and your physician whether you decide to go an anti-diabetic drug or not.

Which Anti-diabetic Drug and Why?

If you decide to go on an anti-diabetic medication, you should discuss it with your physician: Why has the doctor chosen a certain drug and what are its advantages and disadvantages, including all of the possible side-effects.

In my patients, I focus on treating Insulin Resistance — the root cause of Type 2 diabetes — first and foremost. Therefore, I primarily utilize those anti-diabetic drugs which help to treat insulin resistance.

Here is a list of commonly prescribed anti-diabetic medications in the U.S.A., listed by their brand as well as generic names, followed by more detailed and specific information about their advantages, disadvantages and side-effects.........................
