Proper nutrition is the most important step towards taking charge of your diabetes. Most diabetics know this basic fact. However, they continue to struggle with their diet. They feel frustrated. Many get demoralized. There are several reasons why your diet does not work for you and why you don't stay on your diet. Perhaps, you’ll see various aspects of your own struggle with your diet as we proceed through this chapter.
Why Most Diets Fail
I’m sure you’ve resolved many a time to change your diet in order to avoid the horrible diabetic complications your doctor keeps talking about. For a few days or even weeks, you follow
your diet diligently. However, eventually you slip up or slack off or give up. Slowly, you gain back all the weight you lost. You’re back to square one. Do you ever wonder what really happened?
You want to do what’s good for your health, but you end up doing what’s
bad for your health. Crazy, isn’t it?
Take heart: diabetics aren’t by any means the only category of
people who struggle with this issue. Almost everyone sometimes feels as
if there’s someone else controlling their mind. Most people hear that
inner voice that says, “Oh, that wonderful cake. A little piece won’t
harm me. Life is short, enjoy it.” If you obey this inner voice, before
you know it, you’ve finished that piece of cake.
Unfortunately, if you’ve had trouble sticking to your diet and/or are presently overweight—whether you are diabetic or not—it’s likely that this inner voice is largely in control of your
eating behavior! It enslaves you. So before you can make any true,
everlasting change in your eating pattern, you need to be free from this
inner voice. Before you can be free of it, you need to fully understand
it. This inner voice comes from your Acquired Self, as I elaborated in
the previous chapter.
The inner voice that keeps you off track and off your diet consists of memories, concepts, and ideas that swirl around in your mind. From your childhood, you learn that pleasure and fun
comes from food. Birthday parties, holidays, family get-togethers—at
each occasion, food is the center of the celebration.
You’re encouraged to overeat. Often, this food is unhealthy.
Cakes, pies, cookies, donuts, pizza: the list goes on and on. Yet it’s
all wrapped up in the warm glow of fun and pleasure. As you grow up, you
keep adding memories of fun and pleasure through overeating . This is
how your mind gets conditioned and then controls your eating behavior.
Your inner voice comes from your conditioned mind.
